Follow the highway past Warburton and enjoy the magnificent 25 minute drive into the Upper Yarra Valley to Reefton, where you will come to the Upper Yarra Reservoir Park - the upper most public accessible point of the Yarra River.
The Park area was originally a small town constructed for the workers who built the dam between 1947 and 1957.
The Upper Yarra Reservoir Park is popular for picnics, camping, sightseeing, or just an excuse for a drive or ride into a beautiful part of Victoria.
The Park offers breathtaking views of the reservoir and the surrounding catchment from the lookouts.
The maintained gardens and grounds are surrounded by pristine bushland, and offer a spectactular natural environment to escape the city.
Picnic in the Park
The main picnic area is McVeigh's Picnic area. Facilities include an information shelter, gas and wood fired barbecues, rotunda, toilets and picnic tables.
The rotunda is accessed via a short path of compacted crushed rock from the carpark. The rotunda is paved and has one picnic table and a gas barbecue. There is ample room in the rotunda for maneuvering a wheelchair.
There is a wet weather hall in the grounds, that once served as the mess room for the dam construction team. This hall provides sheltered seating, electric barbecues and hot water.
Walks in the Park
The following short walks are available from the Park:
Fern Gully Track, 500 metres, easy - A beautiful shaded self-guided walk through tall eucalypts and a mystical fern gully.
Doctor Creek Track, 2km one way, hard - This steep track takes you up a densely forested hill to the spectacular Doctor Creek Lookout overlooking the reservoir.
Brimbonga Walking Track - Stroll along the track to the viewing platform, and watch the water flow through the reservoir on its way to Melbourne.
