A New Dawn For Old Vines

Old vines – Dry grown – 100% Estate Grown

Since 1971, the vines at Morgan Vineyards have struggled to yield the secrets of their site.

Located in the rolling Seville hills in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, the dry grown handpicked vineyards are planted to just 12 acres of vines, generally yielding less than 3 tonnes to the acre. Less than 1500 dozen bottles are produced annually.

Owners Simon and Michele Gunther purchased Morgan Vineyards in 2009 and have completely renovated and rejuvenated the vineyard and property. The label was inspired by views from the property facing east directly across the valley sitting between Mt Donna Buang and Mt Little Joe.

First planted in 1971 to cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir (among the very oldest vines in the Yarra Valley), the vineyard now also produces tiny quantities of high quality merlot and chardonnay.

Typically, Seville experiences cool wet winters which helps to build sub surface moisture levels. Summers are moderate with temperatures slightly lower than at the northern end of the Yarra Valley. This enables a long, slow ripening period. Cool summer nights help the vines to retain high natural acidities as flavour steadily builds in the grapes. Being dry grown, the vines are naturally limited in their vigour and yield.

In warm years, vintage commences with the chardonnay in late February early March. It is not unusual for the cabernet sauvignon to be picked in early April.

Wines from Morgan Vineyards are dedicated food wines. Pristine fruit flavours are beautifully enhanced by the structure and depth that only mature age vines can bring. Sensitive oak handling by highly regarded winemaker Andrew Matthews, drawing on two decades of wine making experience, gives the wines the chance to express the typicity of their site. Each vintage brings its own challenges but the wines always speak of their origin.

2014 marked the first commercial release for Morgan Vineyards in modern times. The wines are 100% estate grown.

Simon and Michele are dedicated to continuing their efforts to stamp Morgan Vineyards at the very top of the Yarra Valley’s quality producers. Please enjoy the fruits of their labours.
